my new kitchen!

Random wedding fact: Wedding season in Texas comes twice a year (March-April & September-October. Basically, when the weather isn’t too hot or too cold). So… we’ve had some time off these past few months. What am I doing with my time off? Well, staying in the A/C for starters. I’m also back to redecorating my house (if you missed my before-and-after summer projects last year, check them out here). After I did those small projects last summer, I was itching to do something bigger… but it’s not exactly in my DNA to take on ginormous, house-altering projects. I’m scared to do something TOO permanent for fear that I’ll hate it and won’t be able to take it back (I’m forever scared by the terrible haircut I got when I was 13. Being called “Ringo Starr” for all of 7th grade kinda sticks with you… Ha!) So yeah, I’m not so good with committing to things when there is no “undo button”.

OK, so… MAJOR fear of big projects. You get it. Which brings me to my kitchen. I’ve hated the waaaay ugly orange cabinetry in my kitchen since I bought my house a few years ago… But I never had the guts to do anything about it. I was so hesitant to make any changes… kitchens are serious business! But in all actuality, was it even possible to “mess up” my kitchen? I mean, could it get any worse than what it was? Be honest, my cabinets were pretty hideous…

A few months back, I was watching an episode of “Designed to Sell” on HGTV (love that show btw!) Long story short, I was totally inspired by the “face lift” they gave the hideous kitchen on that particular episode. I thought “I can do that… I think...” Not that it was easy. It was months before I was actually ready to commit. I spent hours pinning kitchens on Pinterest to help me work up my nerve (see my Pinterest inspiration boards here and here). I also lived at Home Depot for a few months, obsessing over paint colors, drawer pulls, backsplash tiles, etc. etc. etc! I quickly realized that replacing the cabinets was just too much for my little heart (and little budget) to handle, so I decided to paint the existing ones, add new hardware and a subway tile backsplash. Eventually, I called a contractor. And the rest is history. After about a week of living in saw dust and inhaling paint fumes, I had a new kitchen. Boo-yah!!

I LOVE it so far, but I’ve got a long way to go. Eventually, I’d like to get all stainless steel appliances… but my commitment phobia (and my bank account) are forcing me to take things one step at a time. Right now I’m working on painting the walls and accessorizing (I was going to wait to share photos until all of that was done, but knowing me, it will take another year to commit to a color scheme).  I’m in the process of picking a new paint color for the walls (what you can’t see are the huge “tester” paint blobs on the wall to the right, just outside of the photo. I’ve got it narrowed down to two shades… I think.) Anyhoo, this is where I am so far. Ringo Starr, eat your heart out. :-)
